The Allen-Bradley 1756-L71S is a GuardLogix 5570 controller belonging to the Logix5000 family of controllers. It is a ControlLogix controller with security features. It is a dual-processor solution that must be used with the 1756-L7SP security module to meet SIL 3 or Cat standards. 4/PLe Safety standard. The Security Partner controller is automatically configured and offers major benefits as a single project. It has excellent processing power and speed and is suitable for sports and high performance logic. It has a USB port for communication and can support up to 500 controller connections. The 1756-L71S controller has 2MB of user memory, 1MB of security memory, and 0.98MB of I/O memory. It can support 128,000 digital I/ OS and 4,000 analog I/ OS. It consumes 5mA current at 1.2V DC and 800mA current at 5.1V DC. The power consumption is 2.5W and the thermal dissipation is 8.5 BTU/hr. It weighs 0.55 pounds and has an isolation voltage of 30V (continuous) for basic insulation. It can be installed in any slot in the ControlLogix 1756 chassis. For secure communication, it uses ControlNet, DeviceNet, or EtherNet/IP networks. The 1756-L71S controller can control or monitor I/O through a backplane or I/O link. For controller diagnostics, it has a front display that provides runtime information. It operates with 1756-ESMCAP and 1756-ESMCAPK energy storage modules, which means that a lithium battery is not required. A 1 GB (1784-SD1) secure digital card is pre-installed as optional non-volatile storage, expandable up to 2 GB (1784-SD2).

The 1756-L71S is mainly equipped with 2 MB of standard user memory, 1 MB of safe memory, 0.98 MB of I/O memory, and 1 GB of non-volatile memory, provided by the reserve 1784-SD1 that comes with the controller. Similar to the standard ControlLogix controller, the 1756-L71S has a USB communication port for programming, hardware configuration, and online editing. The controller is capable of handling up to 128,000 discrete I/O points and 4,000 analog I/O points.

The 1756-L71S performs both standard and safety functions. Standard features include I/O control, logic, timing, counting, report generation, communication, arithmetic calculations, and data file manipulation. Security functions are passed from the master controller to the partner security controller. The 1756-L71S does not support controller redundancy and is programmed using relay ladder logic (RLL), structured text, function block diagram, Sequential Function diagram (SFC) and other programming languages. For programming safety tasks, only relay ladder logic is allowed.

Secure communication options supported by the 1756-L71S include Ethernet I/P, ControlNet, and DevideNet. If used with the 1756-CN2/A, 100 ControlNet connections are supported, 40 with the 1756-CNB/D, 1756-CNB/E, and 128 with the 1756-CN2/B. For EtherNet, 256 EtherNet/IP; Allows 128 TCP connections using 1756-EN2x and 128 EtherNet/IP; 64 TCP and 1756-ENBT.
