GE and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan have signed an agreement with the Water and Power Authority of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to develop, build and operate a combined cycle power plant with an installed capacity of 1.8 GW.

It is reported that the new power plant will be located in the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Hamriyah area, a total of three combined cycle units, the first unit is expected to be connected to the grid in May 2021. GE will provide three HA-class gas turbines, three steam turbines, six generators, and three waste heat recovery boilers (HRSG) for the project, and will build the turnkey project through an EPC(Engineering, procurement, construction) master contract.

Sumitomo Group and GE Capital's Energy Financial Services unit, as co-sponsors of the project, will form an equity consortium with Shikoku Power and Sharjah Asset Management Company (SAM), an investment arm of the Government of Sharjah, to support the project. Sharjah Water and Power Authority will purchase electricity from the consortium for 25 years through a power purchase agreement. Over the 25-year period, GE will provide spare parts, repair and maintenance services for power generation assets.
Upon completion of the project, the Hamriyah Power plant will be the first independent combined cycle power plant in the Emirate of Sharjah and is expected to be one of the most efficient in the Middle East, significantly improving the overall operational efficiency of Sharjah's Water and Power Authority.

Scott Strazik, President and CEO of GE Gas Power, said: "Sharjah Water and Power Authority has a clear vision for Sharjah's power sector, and GE is proud to partner with Sumitomo to deliver more efficient, reliable and sustainable electricity to Sharjah's residential and industrial customers. "This project combines GE's industry-leading technology, strong local presence, infrastructure and financing capabilities, and expertise in plant construction, operation and management."

It is understood that GE's HA gas turbine has so far accumulated more than 242,000 hours of operation, obtained more than 80 orders from 35 customers in 16 countries and regions around the world, is one of the fastest growing heavy gas turbines in the world.

In March 2018, Chubu Electric Power Co., LTD., equipped with GE 7HA gas turbine, achieved a combined cycle efficiency of 63.08% in the first phase of the Nishinagoya Power Plant, which was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's most efficient 60 Hz power plant. In June 2016, EDF Bushan Power plant, the world's first GE 9HA gas turbine, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's most efficient 50 Hz power plant with a measured combined cycle plant efficiency of 62.22%.

The three gas turbines of the Hariyah power plant will also reduce 4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year on the existing basis through the application of HA-class gas turbine technology, which is equivalent to reducing 1 million cars in the UAE, significantly reducing the impact of electricity production on the environment of the Emirate of Sharjah.

It is worth noting that GE HA gas turbine was designed with the needs of the Chinese market in mind, and China's first HA turbine will be delivered to Huadian Tianjin Military Grain City site in the near future.

Dan Yang, GE Global vice president and president of GE Power Generation in China, said: "The emission level of GE HA-class gas turbines can fully meet China's national standards. Its superior flexibility is also in line with China's peak demand due to the growth of renewable energy, as well as to adapt to the grid needs to quickly start and stop, fast load up and down the operational needs. Combined with the advantages of high power density per unit area and the modular design to save project installation and commissioning time, GE HA gas turbine is also an ideal choice for Chinese customers."
