Westmore Ethernet extender technology is based on SHDSL and enables the reuse of many types of legacy copper cables, resulting in significant cost savings when installing new systems. The Wolverine DDW-142 is capable of creating highly efficient Ethernet networks over extremely long distances (up to 15 km (9.3 mi)), with data transfer rates up to 15.3 Mbit/s on a simple twisted-pair cable. By "gluing" twisted pair, this transfer rate can be doubled to 30.4 Mbit/s. An integrated switch can connect two Ethernet devices, and an RS-232 port can incorporate a legacy device into an IP network.
WeOS (Westmore Operating System) was developed to provide cross-platform, future-proof solutions. WeOS provides unique security features for this class of products, allowing DDW-142 to be part of an elastic multi-media ring network using the Westmore FRNT protocol or the industry standard STP/RSTP. WeOS was developed to deliver industrial networking solutions with superior serial connection performance - from emulating old AT modems, converting Modbus RTU to TCP, to encapsulating serial data into IP packets.
The DDW-142 offers incredible flexibility and ease of use. Create a point-to-point or multipoint network without any type of configuration. However, if there is a more complex solution that requires some network configuration, it can be easily done using a web interface. A CLI interface is also available so that network professionals can easily and quickly control devices. Once the system is configured, a simple solution is also available for maintenance engineers - USB backup and recovery means that the stored configuration can be automatically downloaded from a USB flash drive.
DDW-142 is typically used in applications such as railways, roads, or utilities where failures can result in significant costs. All Westmore products are designed with high MTBF in mind to improve operational reliability and provide long service life. There are even SHDSL diagnostics and management capabilities that indicate line degradation to allow scheduled maintenance. Because the products are designed for these applications, Westmore also ensures that the products have been tested to ensure that the equipment can operate in extreme temperature, EMC and vibration environments and still provide reliable communication.
