The IC698CMX016-ED is a control memory switch module from Emerson Automation, formerly manufactured by GE Intelligent Platforms (GE IP). It is primarily used to provide deterministic sharing of data between PLCS and compatible devices over a fiber optic network using reflective storage technology.
This module is used for data exchange between the PLC and compatible devices using a fiber optic connection. It has 16MB of SDRAM, operates at +5VDC, and has a current requirement of 1.8 amps. It needs to be mounted on the mainframe rack and connected to slot 3 or 4. It uses LC type fiber optic connectors with insertion loss of 0.35 dB (maximum) and return loss of -30dB.

The module is essentially a storage module, but its main function is to provide deterministic data sharing between the PLC and compatible devices over a fiber optic network using reflected memory technology. It is capable of communicating with up to 256 nodes per network and supports redundant transport mode operation.
In addition, the IC698CMX016 front panel is equipped with various LED status indicators, such as OK, configuration, own data and signal detection, so that users can easily check the working status of the module.
